DR. DEMETRIO M. CERAMELLA

NEW PHILADELPHIA

In five months, Ceramella prescribed 3,060 tablets of Darvocet—an addictive painkiller known to worsen depression—to a severely depressed woman with a history of suicide attempts. On Feb. 6, 1983, four days after she received her 32nd Darvocet prescription, she died of a Darvocet overdose. Ceramella, who testified that the woman had been his patient for several years, said he was unaware of her previous suicide attempts, even though her autopsy report noted she had numerous scars on both wrists and forearms. Carmella destroyed her medical records after her death. Evidence at his hearing showed he had other patients on Demerol and Percodan for two to three years. DEA records show he was one of the leading buyers of amphetamines and methamphetamines in northern Ohio in 1983. Ceramella was cited by the board in January 1984 and his license as revoked a few weeks ago.
